how to Test Kohler Ignition Coil

How will you know your ignition coil has problems? The answer is a spark test. How to do it? Ok, follow the procedures below:

First Procedure

  • First of all turn off the engine
  • Disconnect the spark plug lead.
  • Inspect for any kind of damage. If you find one, replace it.
  • Connect the ignition test tool
  • Use a jumper wire to ground and Leave the spark plug installed
  • Now pull the starter rope. If you can see a spark, then the ignition system is ok.
  • If you don’t see any spark, move to the second procedure

Second Procedure

  • Disconnect kill lead from the ignition module
  • Pull the starter rope. If you see the spark, the ignition module is good to go.
  • If still there is no spark, proceed to the third procedure.

Third Procedure

  • Now inspect any kill circuit components for any fault. Kill switch, oil sensor, and oil alert unit are the components.
  • Remove the machine cover to get access to the ignition module and  the kill lead for any kind of problems
  • If possible, disconnect the kill lead and retake the test.
  • If there is still no spark, it is confirmed that you have problems with the ignition coil. So replace it to get it to work again.

How To Replace Ignition Coil

Now you need to replace the ignition coil. Here is how you can do it.

Tools you Need:

  1. Screwdriver
  2. New ignition coil
  3. Business card or a thin card

1st step: Disconnect the spark pipe wire

  • Pull the wire off from the spark plug

2nd step: Removing the blower housing

  • There is a starter rope on the handle. Release that.
  • Remove the screws.
  • Pull the blower housing out

3rd step: Removing ignition coil

  • You will see a flywheel magnet. Rotate it away from the ignition coil
  • Disconnect the stop wire.
  • Remove the mounting screws
  • Get rid of the old ignition coil

4th step: Installing a new one

  • Connect the new one
  • Loosely connect the screws
  • Pull the ignition coil as far you can from the flywheel magnet.
  • Tight the screws.
  • Use a thin card to check the gap. You can use a business card or something like that.
  • Rotate the flywheel magnet front to the ignition coil
  • Loose the screws and make the flywheel magnet pull against the ignition coil.
  • Tighten the screws
  • Reconnect the top wire.

5th step: Installing the blower housing

  • Assemble the blower housing and connect the screws.
  • Connect the starter rope with the handle.

6th step: Connect the spark plug wire

  • Connect the spark plug
  • Then pull the starter rope.
  • You will notice a spark, and your ignition coil is good to go.
